Inclusive Engineering Education

Elevating Inclusive Engineering

Inclusive engineering design requires the engineers, as the responsible person, to consider the requirements of all possible people using their products, service or design. The building regulations give some guidance on the expectations for accessibility into buildings and within buildings.

Having heard many engineers say they do not speak to Disabled people, so they see no need to design for them, we feel it is important that we help the engineers understand how relevant the needs of disabled people are to Engineering designs. We understand that user experience is not often heard from the perspective of a disabled person. At Towards Belonging Ltd, we aim to help the Engineering industry understand the main concerns and issues experienced by disabled people, through our liaison and interaction with the disabled community.

Katy Deacon is a Visiting Professor at Aston University, specialising in Inclusive Engineering design.

Inclusive Engineering Framework

This inclusive Engineering framework wheel was created by Towards Vision Inclusive Engineering – Home (inceng.org). It is a wonderful tool to aid engineers in designing the most ethical, sustainable, responsible and secure Solutions. All eight elements are important, but the main focus for Towards Belonging Ltd is the people centred Inclusive Engineering design element.

Inclusive Engineering Education

Having an understanding about the requirements for disabled individuals can be difficult if you do not have the perspective of the disabled person in your design team. Towards Belonging enables your company to expand their diversity by having disabled individuals as part of your design process, through lectures, discussion forums and consultations.

We can help you go beyond building regulations requirements and really provide a solution which takes all potential users into account. We work closely with a range of disabled individuals, getting personal first-hand accounts of areas which work well, and which cause difficulty. We have discussed at length with these individuals what will work better, so we can engage with your design teams to help you find the best solution for your situation.
